Scope and Content:
The papers document Robert Lloyd’s professional life primarily as an Art teacher at Phillips Academy Andover and secondarily as a member of the wider profession of art education in New England and the United States and lastly as an architectural designer. Included are materials related to courses Lloyd taught; Phillips Academy committees; nonacademic campus activities such as student groups and housing matters; continuing professional education; regional and national professional service; published and unpublished writing; exhibitions; and privately commissioned design projects. Lloyd created the files in the natural course of his work as a classroom teacher, Art Department administrator, writer, and participant in professional groups beyond campus. Examples of writing and artwork by students are also present. Significant topics represented in these files include art instruction, art education standards and evaluation, academic administration, and campus design. Materials are generally textual and often illustrated, comprising classroom handouts, administrative documents, correspondence, notes, memoranda, clippings, and related printed matter. Visual formats include sketches, photographs, slides, plans, artwork on paper, video, film. Some audio recordings and one item of realia are also present.

This collection is arranged into four series:
Sub-series-A: Courses (1963-1997)
Sub-series B: Administrivia (1962-1996)
Sub-series C: Other (ca.1962-1997)

Series 2: Professional activities (1958-2003)

Series 3: Writings (1956-1997)

Series 4: Design work (ca.1963-1997)

Arrangement

Most of the material resides in folders arranged alphabetically by series in boxes. Audiovisual and oversize materials are grouped in separate boxes.

SERIES DESCRIPTION:

Series 1: Phillips Academy (1962-1997). This series is comprised of three sub-series: Courses, Administrivia, and Other. The first, Courses, includes materials created and accumulated by Lloyd as an instructor of art, design, and architecture. It contains syllabi, assignments, quizzes, and other classroom handouts as well as examples of completed student assignments in a variety of visual, sonic, and textual media: paper, video, audio, and electronic. It also contains unevaluated results of an experimental written test administered by Lloyd to 1974-1975 Visual Studies students in order to explore the effectiveness of measuring learning in visual art.
The second sub-series, Administrivia, documents Lloyd’s participation in and leadership of the Art Department (1973-1981). It also contains records of campus committees and projects. Formats include notes, correspondence, memoranda, reports, sketches, and architectural plans. The third sub-series, Other, documents his involvement in a variety of matters related to life on campus such as student theatrical productions, student boarders, and personal family matters.

Series 2: Professional activities (1958-2003). This series contains records of Lloyd’s service as a secondary school art educator vis a vis regional and national organizations such as the National Association of Independent Schools, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Council of Chief State School Officers, National Art Education Association, and Independent School Association of Massachusetts. It also documents Lloyd’s participation in continuing education workshops and programs such as his yearlong 1981-1982 Klingenstein Fellowship for private school teachers at Columbia University. At Columbia he took classes taught by Lawrence Cremin, Daniel Dunham, Maxine Greene, Paul King, Philip Phenix, and Jonas Soltis; his Fellowship cohort included Christopher Babbs, Elizabeth Bailey, Patricia Bayliss, Brigitte Bentele, Bruce Boxton, Kenneth Diamond, Jim Hejduk, Wendy Kittridge, Rodney LaBrecque, Jane Mallison, Heidi Schneider, and Jay Stroud.

Series 3: Writings (1956-1997). This series contains drafts of published and unpublished articles, books, and speeches. Lloyd wrote about topics such as the methods and value of visual education; perception and communication; and architecture. In 2023 Lloyd donated four booklets of recent writings to the collection; these are in box 53.

Series 4: Design work (ca.1963-1997). This series contains correspondence, sketches, and ephemera related to Lloyd’s paid and volunteer design projects.

Biographical Note

Robert Andrew Lloyd (born in Boston on March 10, 1934) is a Harvard University-trained architect and designer who, prior to retirement in 1997, worked as a secondary school educator. He taught art and design at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, 1962-1997; students included future theatre director Peter Sellars, class of 1975. Lloyd married educator Susan Margaret McIntosh in 1956 and has three children: Benjamin (class of 1977), Seth (class of 1978), and Thomas (class of 1979).

Lloyd graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1952 and from Harvard College in 1956. He earned a master’s degree in architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1959 and apprenticed with furniture designer and former Black Mountain College faculty member Mary “Molly” Gregory from 1959 until 1962. In 1962 he began teaching at Phillips Academy.

At Phillips Academy, Lloyd taught several studio courses including advanced level Architecture (Art 39, Art 310), Contemporary Communications (Art 43, Art 311), Advanced Placement in Studio Art (Art 315), intermediate level Three-Dimensional Design (Art 24), and introductory diploma requirement Visual Studies (Art 10, Art 11, Art 15). The innovative Visual Studies course was introduced in the 1950s to explore ways in which visual experience of the real world translates into two- and three-dimensional imagery and representation. Contemporary Communications began in 1967 and examined commonalities of communication among various cultural genres including visual arts.

Lloyd ran the Visual Studies Institute for Teachers (established in 1962), an intensive, 1-2 week residential program “for teachers, with teachers, by teachers” held each summer at Phillips Academy. Pratt Institute in New York co-sponsored the course.   Instructors included Lloyd, Mary McCarthy, Gerry Shertzer, and Stephen Wicks, all Phillips Academy faculty, as well as David Saul and Amy Brook Snider.

Lloyd also taught art for the Short Term Institutes at Andover and for the “summer program” for Phillips Academy personnel.

He was chair of the Art Department, 1973-1981. During his career faculty colleagues included Elizabeth Ahern, Carl Baden, Audrey Bensley, Gordon “Diz” Bensely, Sally Bloodgood, Chris Cook, David Hanson, Bart Hayes, Aloysius Hobausz, Mary McCarthy, John McMurray, Virginia Powell, Ruth Quattlebaum, Jim Sheldon, Gerry Shertzer, Don Snyder, Elaine Rabinowitz, Shirley Veenema, and Stephen Wicks. Lloyd also served on campus committees related to building and campus design; designed and built theatre sets for student productions; and participated in exhibitions as an organizer and exhibitor at the Addison Gallery of American Art and elsewhere on campus.

In 1973 Dodd, Mead & Co. published Lloyd’s book Images of Survival, which considers aspects of perception and communication. In 1981-1982 he was a Klingenstein Fellow for training of independent school leaders at Columbia University Teacher’s College in New York City. Lloyd held memberships in several professional organizations including the American Association of Craftsmen, Art Association of New England Preparatory Schools, Independent Schools Art Instructors Association, and National Art Education Association. He was among the first U.S. high school art teachers to receive certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Processing Information:

The materials were received by the Archives in the spring of 2015 in boxes containing folders organized roughly by function in somewhat chronological order. According to Lloyd: “I kept folders that were sorted by functions current at the time. If a folder seemed to get too full I created…subcategories, each with a folder. For example…I might start with a folder labeled Art Department, but then subcategories might be created: staff, student show, Dept meetings, grading, diploma requirement, courses, enrollments, etc….As for chronology, within folders I put later docs in front. I put most recent folders in the front of the drawer. I’m afraid that in packing the boxes, some (or much) this structure may have been lost.”

During processing in summer of 2016, original folder labels were retained. The processor arranged the files according to Lloyd’s several functional roles as teacher, administrator, professional educator, writer, and designer. Materials were examined at the folder level. Audiovisual materials were not examined except to record minimal label information; it is assumed that most of the video and audio recordings were created by Lloyd’s students.
