 Abstract:

This collection documents Abbot Academy (Abbot Female Academy; Abbot Female Seminary) from its founding in 1829 to its merger with Phillips Academy in 1973. The Abbot Academy Collection primarily consists of material relating to the administrative functions of the Academy, including material of the Trustees, Treasurer, and other administrative offices.  The collection also includes Abbot Academy memorabilia and student-created work ranging from the late 19th century until the merger. New Accessions, primarily donations from alumnae and friends of Abbot, are still being added (as of 2016).

Scope and Content

The Abbot Academy Collection documents the administration of Abbot Female Academy from its inception in 1829 to its closing and merger with Phillips Academy in 1973. This collection includes a variety of material that captures all aspects of life as an Abbot girl. The bulk of the collection is administrative office records ranging from the office of the treasurer to personnel files. There are also a number of records on students, principals, and committees including the founding documents of the Academy and Board of Trustees. There is an extensive group of course catalogues dating back to 1839 as well as ledger books of the Alumnae Association. Records that document the student experience include student papers and journals from various Abbot classes, dating back to the late 1830s. Donations from alumnae through the Abbot Archives Project have added to the material on student experience; further accruals are possible. Many of the alumnae, faculty, and staff document cases contain photographs. Due to ongoing digitization efforts,  photographs from the Trustee Personnel files from series 1, sub-series A, along with photographs from Faculty Personnel files in series 1, sub-series F, have been removed for scanning and are housed with other Abbot Academy photographs. Photographs pertaining to student life and received as part of alumni gifts have also been removed and placed with the Abbot Academy photograph collection. Part of this collection is also Abbot Academy memorabilia, which includes scrapbooks, pennants, sashes, brooches, blazer and sweater set, dishes, an ashtray, and a trashcan. Two record center cartons of payroll records (1969-1973) have been removed for shredding based on the Phillips Academy retention schedule. Any material pertaining to Susan Lloyd or her work in creating A Singular School (1978) has also been removed (to the Phillips Academy History department records). A restriction of 75 years has been placed on material within the collection that is deemed sensitive. Abbot Academy related collections (McKeen) can also be found at Duke University.

Researchers may particularly be interested in correspondence between the McKeens, their students and members of the Board of Trustees, dating from the 1860s to the 1880s, material on alumna Helen Ripley (class of 1930), who served as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II, deeds and other early building documentation including Madame Sarah Abbot’s account book from 1812, pre-Abbot Female Academy. There is also a large amount of material from various administrative departments in regards to the merger with Phillips Academy. Researches interested in Abbot Academy Fundraising information should look in both series 1, sub-series 3: Office of the Treasurer, as well as in series 3, sub-series 2.  For more photographs and scrapbooks, researchers should inquire about the Abbot Academy Photograph and Scrapbook Collections that are housed separately. Note: three documents detailing Sara Abbot finances with Samuel Farrar are in Phillips Family Papers box 2 folder 2.3.

SERIES DESCRIPTION:

Series 1: Administrative Records (1812-2011, bulk dates 1915-1973). This series is comprised of six sub-series. Board of Trustees (1828-1979) includes founding documents on the institution, originally established as Abbot Female Academy (and referred to as Abbot Female Seminary). This sub-series also includes personnel files, reports given to and generated by the Board of Trustees, meeting minutes, and a variety of trustee-related committee materials. The second subs-series, Office of the Principal (1836-1973), documents decisions made by the principal, correspondence, form letters, speeches, and events coordinated or held by this office. Researchers may be interested in the extensive speeches by Marguerite Hearsey and Mary Hinkley Crane as well as the correspondence between both Phebe and Philena McKeen and their students in the late 19th century. Office of the Treasurer (1871-1974) documents Abbot Academy’s income and expenses, primarily financial reports and Abbot Academy account information. This sub-series contains restricted material including faculty and staff salaries and student tuition bills (restricted to 75 years). The fourth sub-series, Office of the Dean (1950-1974), contains information on the Indian Exchange Program (student information restricted for 75 years), sample exams from various departments, syllabi, and some merger information. General Administrative Records/Other Offices (1831-2011) includes course catalogues, commencement programs and order of exercises, information on Abbot Academy’s library, and Abbot Academy Association founding documents and material. Personnel Records (1832-1982) is the final sub-series, which contains information on Abbot faculty and staff. This includes information on the original faculty of Abbot until the faculty that was with the Academy during the time of the merger. There is a distinction in the box list that separates non-faculty personnel files (Box 91-92) and files that include members of the faculty that did not stay after the merger with Phillips Academy (Box 87-90).

Series 2: Student Life (1831-2014, bulk 1954-1972). This series is comprised of three sub-series. The first sub-series, Clubs and Activities (1831-1970), consist of club materials and other programs that Abbot students participated in during their time at the Academy. The bulk of this sub-series is Student Government/Student Council records from 1911-1973. There is also material from a variety of the student publications on campus including Cynosure and the Sphinx.  Sub-series two, Personal Materials (1838-1972), includes diaries, journals, school essays and projects as well as correspondence. Sub-series three, Gifts from Alumnae (1866-2014), contains material that has been recently accessioned or accrued. This series will continue to grow as more accruals are expected through donations to the Abbot Archive Project.

Series 3: Alumnae Affairs (1829-1979, bulk 1920-1973). This series has four sub-series. The first sub-series, Abbot Academy Clubs and Alumnae Association (1829-1973), documents Abbot Academy Clubs formed all over the United States, mostly catering to alumnae. One of the earliest clubs was the Abbot Boston Club, but there were Abbot Academy Clubs as far as Ohio and California. Because the Abbot Academy Clubs were associated with the Abbot Academy Alumnae Association, Alumnae Association material is included in this sub-series. Founding documentation and alumnae news letters are included in Alumnae Association material.  Sub-series two, Fundraising Campaigns (1883-1975), includes the records of various fundraising campaigns developed to raise money for Abbot Academy. Funds include: New Abbot Fund, Loyalty Endowment Fund, Second Century Fund, and others. Some of this material is restricted. Abbot Anniversaries and Reunions (1829-1979) is the third sub-series and includes reunion reports from the class of 1896 to 1920. It also includes anniversary celebrations of the establishment of Abbot Academy including the 50th, 75th, Centennial, and the 150th anniversary. Memorabilia (1880-1959) is the fourth sub-series and contains material related to Abbot including school song books, hymnal books, “in memorial” material, and other Abbot Academy associated material.

Series 4: Campus (1812-1972). This series contains documents on the construction of the Abbot Academy campus. Material includes Madame Sarah Abbot’s account books as well as original deeds to Abbot Academy property. There is also information on rented property, renovations, and some blue prints.

Historical Note

Abbot Female Academy, also known as Abbot Female Seminary, was established by Sarah Abbot in 1829. After her passing in 1848, Sarah Abbot left a substantial amount of money to the school in order to continue the mission of Abbot Female Academy. The name did not officially change to Abbot Academy until 1879, under the guidance and direction of Philena McKeen, Abbot’s longest serving principal (1859-1892). Between 1829 and 1973, Abbot Academy had eighteen principals; Donald A. Gordon wasthe last and one of the only male principals, his term of service began in 1968 and ended with the Academy’s merger with Phillips Academy in 1973. The following items have been removed from the collection:

  • Two record center cartons containing payroll records from 1969 to 1973; to be shredded.
  • Material on Susan Lloyd and her publication A Singular School (1978) have been removed due to being a secondary source to the collection.
  • Scrapbooks and photographs have been removed and housed with Abbot Scrapbook Collection and Abbot Photograph Collection.

Series 2: Student Life, 1831-2014, bulk 1954-1972

 Scope and Content

This series is comprised of three sub-series. The first sub-series, Clubs and Activities (1831-1970), consist of club materials and other programs that Abbot students participated in during their time at the Academy. The bulk of this sub-series is Student Government/Student Council records from 1911-1973. There is also material from a variety of the student publications on campus including Cynosure and the Sphinx.  Sub-series two, Personal Materials (1838-1972), includes diaries, journals, school essays and projects as well as correspondence. Sub-series three, Gifts from Alumnae (1866-2014), contains material that has been recently accessioned or accrued. This series will continue to grow as more accruals are expected through donations to the Abbot Archives Project. Of particular interest is a book manuscript by Kate Douglas Wiggin in box 118.

 Scope and Content

Series 3: Alumnae Affairs, 1829-1979, bulk 1920-1973

This series has four sub-series. The first sub-series, Abbot Academy Clubs and Alumnae Association (1829-1973), documents Abbot Academy Clubs formed all over the United States, mostly catering to alumnae. One of the earliest clubs was the Abbot Boston Club, but there were Abbot Academy Clubs as far as Ohio and California. Because the Abbot Academy Clubs were associated with the Abbot Academy Alumnae Association, Alumnae Association material is included in this sub-series. Founding documentation and alumnae news letters are included in Alumnae Association material.  Sub-series two, Fundraising Campaigns (1883-1975), includes the records of various fundraising campaigns developed to raise money for Abbot Academy. Funds include: New Abbot Fund, Loyalty Endowment Fund, Second Century Fund, and others. Some of this material is restricted. Abbot Anniversaries and Reunions (1829-1979) is the third sub-series and includes reunion reports from the class of 1896 to 1920. It also includes anniversary celebrations of the establishment of Abbot Academy including the 50th, 75th, Centennial, and the 150th anniversary. Memorabilia (1880-1959) is the fourth sub-series and contains material related to Abbot including school song books, hymnal books, “in memorial” material, and other Abbot Academy associated material.

Arrangement

This series is arranged chronologically. Sub-series A: Abbot Academy Clubs and Alumnae Association is mostly in alphabetical order when the record pertains to a state in which there were Abbot Clubs (rather than general Abbot Alumnae events). Sub-series B: Fundraising Campaigns is organized by the date of the fundraising campaign and is in chronological order within that grouping.
