Charles C. Chaffee was a student at Phillips Academy from 1909 to 1912. Originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Chaffee lived in Draper House during his time at Andover. The scrapbook is in relatively good condition though the spine is separated from the cover, and a couple pages are loose. The paper itself is in great condition, with only a few small tears in the whole scrapbook.

The first couple pages of the scrapbook are filled with the names, hometowns of Chaffee’s classmates and a little anecdote written by each of his peers about him or other things about the Academy; these entries date from 1909 to 1912. A lot of the names are repeated each year, indicating that they might have been the names of Chaffee’s dorm mates at Draper House. Following the first pages of names are many newspaper clippings about the Phillips Academy football team members that describe several games against Yale, Brown, Harvard, and Exeter. Chaffee included the articles and photographs leading up to and following the Andover/Exeter football games for his years at Andover. There are even a couple items about the college football teams in and around his hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee, which date from after he graduated from Andover. Despite the large number of football-related pictures and articles found in his scrapbook, Chafee was a football fan not a team member. He was actually one of the top high jumpers on the track team. In addition to the football items and a couple track medals, the book includes the Blue Book from 1909-1910, a photograph from the “Commons Stag” from 1911, two theatre programs, and postcards. Taking into consideration all the items that Chaffee felt were worth saving, it is clear that the Andover students during his time did not care much about current events, or anything other than athletics.
