Samuel Phillips son of Rev. Samuel Phillips of Andover (South Parish) was born at Andover Feb 24. 1705- grad. H.U. 1734 marry Elizabeth Barnard, daughter of Theodre Barnard and grand daughter of Rev. Thomas Barnard of Andover – died Aug. 21 1790 aged 75 years.-
After leaving college he taught the grammar school for some time; then settled in business at the North Parish- his store being part of the old family mansion still standing that property came to him by his wife. He always took an active part in the affairs of the Town and much of the public papers of that time is in his hand writing. He was frequently a Representative of the Gen. Court, was of the Council board in the difficult period previous to the revolution, and was a staunch Whig. For many years he discharged the duties of a Magistrate with strict regard to order and the good of Society-
He was more than 40 years Deacon of the North Parish Church and was a firm supporter of religious order.
Having acquired much and having but one Son who was earnestly desirous of property, good learning, especially the virtuous and pious education of youth, he with his brother John of Exeter, set about a generous sum for the support of a free school at Andover which went into operation in April 1778. This well directed beneficence will deservedly perpetuate his memory to future generations.
Mr. Phillips, whose letters are in this volume, died Sept. 29 1789 leaving but one son Hon Samuel Phillips all the other children died young-
