Processing note This material is believed to have been first classified and described in paper inventories prior to 1980. In 2014 the materials were rehoused by Emily Tordo, and a finding aid created, based on the current organization. The existing inventory was digitized and correlated to box numbers.
Within the finding aid, whenever possible, titles were taken from the title page, cover or spine of a volume, or from the original folder. Titles and item descriptions appearing in the finding aid reflect the original sequence, but not necessarily the original punctuation or capitalization or words; the spelling of some words has been corrected in places to improve clarity.

Alfred Ernest Stearns (June 6, 1871- November 1949) served as the ninth principal of Phillips Academy from March 1903 to his retirement in 1933, succeeding Cecil Bancroft, his uncle, who retired in 1901. During the two year interval between Bancroft’s death in October 1901 and Stearns’ appointment as principal in 1903 Professor William Graves served as Acting Principal for one year followed by Stearns himself who had been Director of Athletics and as well as acting as Bancroft’s assistant. Following this trial year the Board of Trustees records show that Alfred E. Stearns was elected Principal by unanimous vote. Stearns continued to lead the academy for almost thirty years, during a period of growth in both the physical plant and academics, until the fall of 1931 when he experienced some medical issues and had to take a leave of absence. This absence would last for the remainder of the academic year and for the following, 1932-1933, academic year until his formal resignation in 1933. Charles Henry Forbes, instructor in Latin 1891-1932, served as acting headmaster during this time. For a complete list of the Principals of Phillips Academy, since its founding in 1778, please visit the Archives website. From 1778 to 1928, the title of the Head of School was “Principal”.  In 1928, the title was changed to “Headmaster”, and finally with the appointment of Barbara Landis Chase, in 1994 the title was again changed to “Head of School.” For more information on the history of Phillips Academy please refer to the book by Frederick S. Allis, Jr. Youth From Every Quarter: A Bicentennial History of Phillips Academy, Andover For published works by Alfred Stearns please refer to the catalog on the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library website. Some of Stearns’s books are online: The Challenge of Youth (1923), The Education of the Modern Boy (1925), An Amherst Boyhood (1946)
